FZ-Recycling was honored for its unique solution in styrofoam recycling. This is because Styropor is not incinerated here but recovered as a raw material. This applies in particular to insulation materials with the ingredient HBCD, a flame retardant that was used in virtually all insulation materials until 2016 and turns them into hazardous waste when they are dismantled or removed. By compacting 50:1, only one truck goes to physical recycling instead of 50 trucks to incineration. This is an ecological and economic gain. After separation from chemical additives, the basic raw material goes back into the recyclable material cycle as high-quality granulate.

Mobile polystyrene recycling also in the Ahr valley

The mobile plants of FZ-Recycling in containers or trailers compact the styrofoam directly at the construction site. Thus, the mobile plants could also be used quickly in the Ahr valley after the flooding. At various collection points, those affected were able to hand in the often thickly silted polystyrene sheets from floor or wall insulation free of charge. With more than 9000 damaged buildings, quite a lot came together, which could be compacted and transported away by FZ-Recycling after rough pre-cleaning in continuous operation.

The plants, which were built by FZ-Recycling itself, can be used by any craftsman, whether a demolition company or a roofer. FZ-Recycling offers interested parties various rental and purchase options to suit the respective requirements. Mobile as a trailer or in a container, which also finds a place on large construction sites. The size and capacity of each plant is entirely determined by the customer’s needs.

Raw material recovery and saving CO2 are just a few arguments in favor of recycling with the company. The disposal of EPS in waste incineration is complex and expensive and therefore not a sustainable option both ecologically and economically. Since May 2021, FZ-Recycling has been offering a much more attractive and sustainable service than disposal in waste incineration. This is now attracting nationwide interest, with the result that the machines are in operation throughout Germany. As a result, the site in the Ahrweiler district is growing and creating new jobs.

Learning from experience and passing on this knowledge is an ideal idea and can also become a business model. The latest venture that we are pursuing shows how this can be achieved with LIVE AUTOMATION. Indeed, this is a story to watch. Best practice means that others can imitate what has already been created here. That’s why we tell the story from the beginning and are happy to connect you to LIVE AUTOMATION so that you can use the experiences that have emerged here.

The most recent project came about when the start-up FZ-Recycling (FZR) left its garage days behind and was considering building its own new building. FZR develops recycling systems that are now being built in the new production facility. The main character of our story, COO Leif Ziebeil, is professionally familiar with smart programming of system technology. Digitization is therefore no stranger to the central figure in this story. As a young client, Leif Ziebeil was not immodest right from the start when it came to his demands on efficiency, sustainability and climate compatibility of the new building. But like every builder, he quickly reached the limits of what was possible and affordable, and thus reached the limits of his willingness to compromise. But giving up is not in his DNA.

The result is an industrial building in the low-rise standard made of largely dismantled and thus recyclable material with a 99 kWp photovoltaic system on the roof, charging stations and a wood pellet heating system. Everything carefully planned, selected and monitored. It quickly became clear to the client that only the optimal interaction of all individual components would lead to the desired effects.

Smart controls are therefore a must. It is not enough just to choose good technology, because the optimal and most efficient result can only be achieved if all technologies work together. Right here was the challenge. The systems available on the market for this are usually difficult to access, expensive, complex and system-integrated. That’s why it was said: Do it Yourself. To save costs and not have to accept any loss of efficiency in the building.

With Loxone, the client finally found an open and user-friendly system that can connect all technical systems and implement many other requirements, such as alarm systems and access control. After installing the hardware, programming the smart building control was entirely in the hands of the builder.

Today the FZ-Recycling building is finished, works efficiently and fullfills the wishes and needs of the users. The systems that are developed and built here in the production facility are now also equipped with the smart control. The diverse experiences that have been made along the way flow into the new LIVE AUTOMATION department and are therefore also available to other clients. The name says it all, because every AUTOMATION has to stay aLIVE, individually set and adapted to the technology and the people who use it, with their constantly changing needs.

These savings in waste and transport costs, CO2 and resources are a win-win situation for the contractor and the environment. And goal achieved for the team from FZ-Recycling – think circular: regional and decentralized.

For builder Leif Ziebeil, this has become an everyday occurrence in the past few months. But despite all the tensions and surprises – it’s done. We have moved in.

99.9 kWp photovoltaic systems produce electricity on the roof and supply buildings and production. The vision of circularity, sustainability and energy efficiency has become real. Anyhow – even after months of planning and construction, the corona pandemic and lockdown, the ideas and plans have become a tangible reality.

Even in times of Corona, which has made a lot of things difficult, we are confident about the future” With the vision of a more sustainable future and the mission to advance the circular economy, Thinking Circular® is well positioned and prepared to assist their customers in mastering the challenges of implementing systematically greener concepts after the crisis.

Space for thinking and producing is scarce, which we experienced in our growth process. With every step we take, the need for space grows. So we decided to develop our own area. The choice for our head office has been made with an eye to the future and the possibility of development. Our small community of circular economy start-ups has deliberately chosen the location in the Niederzissen industrial area, because this is where we are at home. This is how FZ-Recycling started in Kottenheim, Thinking Circular® had its first seat in Sinzig. Until December 2019 our common rooms were in Kapellenstrasse 7 in Niederzissen in the old “Schiele Hall”. And since January we have gradually outgrown the construction site mode at our new headquarters in “Im Schülert 13”.

The operating site there offers 600 m2 of production space, 300 m2 of social and office space as well as approx. 2800 m2 of reserve space for further development. This now forms our company home. We subject our demands on circularity, sustainability and energy efficiency to a reality check. We want to be and remain credible, which means that the building structures must live up to this claim.
