Safety in the Ahr Valley
Five years after the flood, documentation, analysis—50 forward-looking projects in pictures and texts on reconstruction and a declaration of love for the region #WeAHRopen
The Ahr Valley was devastated by flooding after heavy rainfall in 2021. Many people died. Even 5 years after the flood, questions remain that cry out for solution-oriented answers and clear, simple explanations: How is it possible to rebuild a region that has been completely destroyed by flooding? What processes and dynamics lead to successful implementation, and how does this affect people? Can experiences from the Ahr Valley reconstruction region after the 2021 flood be passed on? And will this make life in the region safer?
Editor Eveline Lemke, former minister, lives in the region. Together with other authors and experts involved in the reconstruction of the region, she identified mechanisms, processes, and projects that are characteristic of the efforts to build resilience and resistance. The documentation also includes an extensive collection of sources. At annual scientific conferences marking the anniversary of the flood, they ask groundbreaking questions about good practice after such a disaster in order to enable conclusions to be drawn and lessons to be learned in the region and to seek discourse with other affected regions. Despite all the complexity, the authors succeed in presenting the information in a simplified manner in simple, easy-to-read, and short texts that are important elements on the path to greater resilience.
The powerful imagery of the photos from the region make the book a contemporary document. People, animals, nature, technology, construction sites, and again and again the Ahr River—the illustrated book is also a declaration of love for the region and an invitation to all who have not yet been there.
The insight into the region is also intended to give hope. The good life finds a place in all the changes shown. The projects presented demonstrate how people are fighting for their homeland and rebuilding their future. After all, they have also experienced wonderful things during the crisis: neighborhoods, friendships, volunteerism, responsibility, and solidarity. For many people in the region, all of this has taken on a special new meaning that provides security. That’s why: With certainty, Ahr Valley
The region is open to visitors. Winegrowers, restaurateurs, and hotels are waiting for you. And tour guides also offer construction site tours and insights into the development of the valley. With this book, you can prepare for your trip to the region. #WeAHRopen
